What This Is

Not another conference.
A different kind of room.

Most Korea-focused gatherings pack speakers into plenary halls and call it a day. The West Coast Exchange operates on a different premise: that the most important conversations happen between sessions — over dinner, on a border observation trail, or at a rooftop overlooking the Yellow Sea. The program is deliberately light. The room is deliberately small. The access is deliberately uncommon.

Off the Record, By Design

Chatham House Rules apply across all sessions and field visits. No press coverage of individual remarks. Senior officials attend precisely because they can speak candidly here.

Light Load, Deep Conversation

Four to six focused panels over three days — no more than half a day per day. Extended meals, evening receptions, and an outdoor beach setting give the program room to breathe.

Access That Cannot Be Purchased

Restricted field visits to Aegibong Observatory on the inter-Korean border. Areas not open to independent visitors. Briefings from operational — not just retired — military perspectives.

A Room Worth Being In

Diplomats, military officers, researchers, journalists, defector advocates, and business analysts — in the same room. Most events optimize for one community. This one brings all of them together.

Built on a proven format. The East Coast Exchange (Goseong, 2022) drew 90+ participants from 15+ embassies, ROK military commands, global financial institutions, think tanks, and human rights organizations. Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun delivered the keynote. The West Coast Exchange is its direct successor.

The Program

Three days. No wasted hours.

Beyond the Conference Room

Where context becomes tangible.

You can read about the inter-Korean border. Standing at a restricted observation post looking north is a different experience — and one that consistently produces the most memorable conversations at any Korea Risk Group event.

Field Excursion · Day Two

Aegibong Observatory

One of the most strategically significant observation points on the west coast of the Korean peninsula. Aegibong sits at the confluence of the Han and Imjin rivers, directly across from North Korean territory. Access requires coordination with South Korean military authorities and is not open to independent visitors — entry is arranged exclusively through Korea Risk Group as part of the West Coast Exchange program.

Coastal Walk · Day Three

Eulwangni Beach

A sandy beach adjacent to The Week& Resort — and a rare luxury at any professional conference. The Saturday morning walk has become an informal Korea Risk Group tradition: where participants exchange cards, make plans, and decide to come back the following year. Incheon Airport is 15 minutes away.

Adjacent to resort  ·  Optional  ·  15 min to Incheon Airport (ICN)

What past participants said.

"The strength of this whole event was the range of views — and the visit to the observation post, definitely not open to ordinary tourists. Well worth diverting from my business in Seoul."

Journalist · Seoul-based

"Excellent opportunity to meet great speakers, diplomats, journalists, professors, and military officers. Program was very well prepared and thought provoking."

ROK Army Colonel

"Such an important, timely event. The community gathered here — people with genuine passion for these issues — is unlike any other on this topic."

Military Expert · ROK-based

"This was the bees knees and should do it again next year."

Human Rights Specialist · Korea

"We saw parts of South Korea I had never seen before and greatly enjoyed conversations with a very knowledgeable group. Well worth diverting for a couple of days."

Former White House Official

"I can't thank you enough for including me in this wonderful group. The discussion was vibrant, the trip was memorable, and the hard work your team put in showed in every detail."

The Venue

The Week& Resort, Incheon

A resort property directly adjacent to Eulwangni beach, with outdoor pools, a rooftop terrace, and purpose-built event spaces. Not a convention centre. Not a business hotel. The physical setting of the West Coast Exchange is as deliberate as the program.

Fifteen minutes from Incheon International Airport. International participants route directly through ICN without entering Seoul. Arrive Thursday afternoon and depart Saturday with a direct airport transfer.

No transit day required. International participants coming through Incheon can route directly to the resort and back — eliminating a full hotel night in Seoul from your schedule.
